SimpleMaps - US ZIP Code Database

ZIP code data provided by SimpleMaps. Used under the SimpleMaps Basic License for commercial use.

The ZIP code database includes coordinates, city names, state codes, and other geographic information for approximately 33,000 US ZIP codes.

Overture Maps Foundation - Addresses

US street-address matching uses data from the Overture Maps Foundation's addresses theme. Suggested citation: "Overture Maps Foundation, overturemaps.org."

Overture's addresses theme is compiled from over 175 source datasets, each carrying its own license rather than one license for the whole theme - Overture's own attribution page lists every source and its terms individually, and is the authoritative reference for which license applies in a specific area.

One of those 175+ sources is the US DOT National Address Database itself (see below) - Overture's own coverage and this site's separate, direct NAD merge overlap in places rather than being two unrelated datasets.

Used by the Route Optimizer and any other tool on this site that resolves a US street address to a location.

National Address Database (NAD) - US DOT

US street-address matching also uses the National Address Database, aggregated by the US Department of Transportation from state, local, and tribal government contributors. Public domain (USA.gov Public Domain label).

Provided "as is" with no warranty of accuracy or completeness, per USDOT's own terms - not to be used as a legal description of a property.

Where both sources have data for the same ZIP code, this site's address data prefers NAD's coordinate for a matching address and adds any address only one source has.

Used by the Route Optimizer and any other tool on this site that resolves a US street address to a location.

Geocodio

US street-address matching also uses Geocodio to resolve an address neither Overture nor NAD covers.

Geocodio's own terms don't require attributing Geocodio itself, but do make the customer responsible for attributing Geocodio's underlying data sources where those sources require it. Those sources vary by result - TIGER/Census data (most Geocodio results) is US government work in the public domain and needs none, but others (OpenStreetMap under ODbL, GeoNames under CC BY 4.0, Open Civic Data under CC BY-SA 3.0 US) do. Geocodio's own data sources page is the authoritative list.

Geocodio's own terms permit storing and reusing results where the underlying source allows it - each result this site caches also records which of Geocodio's sources it came from, so that can be checked per result rather than assumed.

Self-Hosted Vector Basemap

Most maps on this site use a self-hosted vector basemap built with Protomaps' open-source styles, rendered from OpenStreetMap data and served from this site's own infrastructure. Falls back automatically to a hosted vector alternative, then to plain OpenStreetMap raster tiles, if it can't load.

OpenStreetMap Tiles

The raster fallback above, and the default tile layer on any tool not yet migrated to the vector basemap, come from OpenStreetMap's own tile servers, subject to their tile usage policy.

Satellite view tiles provided by Esri, sourced from various imagery providers.
