Ranking is a stronger claim than a radius search's "everything inside the circle": it says this one is closer than that one. The Canadian data can't always support that claim. A postal code's centroid is a mean position across a whole district, not a single address, so when two results sit closer together than either code's own address area is wide, calling one 1st and the other 2nd would be more precise than the data actually is. This tool shows those as a tied group instead of guessing an order for them - the same honesty rule that flags a scattered postal code rather than drawing it with false confidence.

Every other postal code tool ranks its results with the same confidence regardless of how close together they are. This one doesn't, because the underlying data doesn't always support it: a postal code centroid is a mean position across a whole district, and when two results are closer together than either district is wide, a strict 1st-and-2nd ordering would be more precise than the measurement actually is. Where that happens, results are shown tied rather than falsely ordered - see the accuracy figures below for exactly how often, and why.

Before you search: what "nearest" can and can't mean here

A Canadian postal code's centroid is not delivery-grade precision, and neither is a rank built from it. Measured directly:

  • Only 42.8% of Canadian postal codes have every address inside them within 50 metres of the code's centre point. 69.2% are within 100 metres, 89.0% within 200 metres.
  • A code with a 1.3km address spread and a code with a 4km address spread, whose centroids sit 200 metres apart, cannot be honestly ranked 1st and 2nd - the centroid difference is smaller than the uncertainty in either position. This tool marks that pair "Tied" and explains why, rather than presenting a confident order it can't back up.
  • Rural postal codes (second character zero) are 0.54% of all codes but hold 13.6% of addresses, with a median worst case of 9,388 metres from the code's centre to an address inside it. In sparsely populated FSAs, the genuinely nearest other postal code can legitimately be 15 to 20 kilometres away.
  • 101 of the 852,474 postal codes in this tool (0.01%) have address records too scattered to safely place with a single centroid. Rather than guess, or hide the problem, this tool marks them "Scattered" wherever they appear and treats their own distance as unreliable rather than a source of a false tie or a false rank.

Why are some postal codes shown as tied instead of ranked?

Because ranking by distance claims more precision than a postal code centroid can support. Only 42.8% of Canadian postal codes have every address within 50 metres of their own centre point, so two centroids 200 metres apart can easily belong to codes whose real address areas overlap by far more than that. When the gap between two results is smaller than the address area covered by at least one of these codes, this tool shows them as a tied group sharing one rank rather than picking a 1st and 2nd it can't actually back up.

Why might a rural postal code's nearest neighbour be far away?

Rural Canadian postal codes (second character zero) cover far more ground than urban ones - a median worst case of 9,388 metres from a rural code's centroid to an address inside it, and some FSAs stretch across tens of kilometres with very few postal codes assigned. A Canadian postal code is a district covering a group of addresses, not a single point or delivery location. In dense urban areas it can be as small as one side of a city block; in rural areas it can span many square kilometres. This tool's centroid for each code is the mean position of its own served addresses, which is a genuine measurement, not a guess, but a mean position across a district is still a district, not a doorstep.

Why does it say my postal code is a PO box?

827 Canadian postal codes have no mappable address behind them because every address record under that code was a PO box, a postal station box, or general delivery - a delivery destination, not a physical place. Entering one of these as your origin reports specifically which category it is, not a generic "not found".

How is distance measured?

Distances are straight-line ("as the crow flies") measurements between postal code centroids, in kilometres. Actual driving distance will be longer due to road layouts.

Where does this data come from?

Statistics Canada's National Address Register (catalogue 46-26-0002), vintage June 2026, used under the Statistics Canada Open Licence. Each postal code's centroid is the mean position of its own served addresses, with PO box, postal station, and general delivery records already excluded before that mean was taken.
